Mapesbury Dell looks great now, but it wasn’t always that way. It used to be a scary place covered with graffiti, abused by addicts and was hardly used. The great transformation started to happen when a few of us, with the full support of the Mapesbury Residents’ Association decided in 2000 that our local green space was too valuable to be allowed to go to waste.
To cut a long story short Mapesbury Dell Trust (“the Trust”) was formed: The Trust and Membership.
Through loads of hard work (all voluntary) we managed to obtain grants from the Doorstep greens Scheme and the Living Spaces Scheme, as well as money through ‘Planning Gain’.
Everyone was consulted through ‘Planning for Real’ and Questionnaires. Many, many local people helped to make the consultation work. The eventual landscaping brief and in turn the present design of the Dell took full account of the feedback received : Consultation and Landscaping.
Although the Dell is owned by Brent Council, legal agreements were made for the future running of the Dell through a steering committee comprised of representatives of the Trust and Brent Parks and Brent Council entered a binding covenant ensuring that the Dell will be kept as a park for the next 80 years: Management and Legal Agreements and
Throughout 2005 the landscaping works were undertaken, finally finishing in November. Landscaping Works
The Dell was officially re-opened on 4th November 2005 by Bill Oddie. 1,500 or more attended the grand opening party. Opening Party Photographs
